Permaculture Questions

I was wondering about containing the chickens/ducks/goats/whatever we choose. Can we learn to make nets and use that as a barrier? Do we have to use metal (chicken wire)? I gues goats would eat the net...but do they need to be contained anyway?

I was also thinking about dogs. We need to find out how many dogs can work in the system we are building after we have more planning done and have a better idea of the size. I was wondering what sort of dog(s) we'd get. I know that the Catahoula is a good working dog. I know that pitt bulls are good working dogs too....and can with stand many dog diseases that other breeds can't.

Any ideas?

Why do we need dogs? Why not mules? or if it's protection you're looking for, we'll just strategically place nets all over the place to capture our enemies.

As for netting, I say we harvest hemp. It's illegal in the U.S. but damn them all. It's oil is great for the body and it's incredibly strong - it was used for ship rope centuries ago. Also, it's beneficial for the land and is best used to rotate crops with it since it doesn't require many pesticides, thus allowing the earth to restore to its natural state. We won't be using pesticides anyway.

Oh! That's another thing. We need to research organic gardening and find the best plants to grow and the different techniques used to deter insects.

HAHAHA!!! Dogs are good for running off bears, racoons, etc.

They also are a great alarm system. We don't need a bunch of them.

If you check out some of the permaculture links they have many resources on what to grow.

I am also researching beekeeping to assist in pollination of our gardens, for honey, candles (with hemp wicks), and lip balm etc.
